Fleas and ticks are one of the major threats to dogs and cats. These parasites should be controlled effectively for the pet to remain healthy. Fleas and ticks usually lodge in the pet's body and cause severe skin infections. Sprays are considered to be one of the best alternatives for flea treatment. Flea sprays are effective against existing skin infections, initial skin allergies or dermatitis. Spray treatment is applicable for dogs and cats from 8 weeks of age. This treatment is usually carried out for immediate relief from skin diseases caused by ticks and mites.
Spray treatments are long lasting treatment measures for fleas and ticks. For the effective control of pests and other parasites that affect dogs and cats, topical application of this product is necessary. The spray products usually contain permethrin, pyrethrin or fipronil. Products containing permethrin must be strictly avoided for cats. There are other different types of flea and tick control techniques such, as flea combs, collars and shampoos; sprays tend to be the most effective.
In general, pet spray comes in small bottles or pumps. Spray the solution evenly all over the pet's body. Make sure not to soak the pet with the solution and to avoid his face and eyes. Use the cotton balls dipped in the spray solution to apply around eyes and nose. If the pet shows allergic reaction to a particular spray, then discontinue its use and seek the veterinarian's help immediately. A silent spray is helpful as noisy sprays may scare the pet.
One should take strict precautionary measures while using these sprays, such as face masks, rubber gloves or disposable gowns. Never use several sprays together as it may harm the animal. Follow the instructions on the spray bottle carefully. Take care not to use a dog flea spray on a cat, as it can significantly harm the cat.
The pet owners usually prefer products containing natural ingredients for treatment to avoid the possible side effects of chemical sprays. It is advisable to use sprays containing natural ingredients such as cedar wood oil and peppermint oil. Inhaling synthetic flea sprays can be equally harmful to the pets and the humans. In such case, the use of natural sprays is considered to be a safe option. Moreover, sofas or carpets soiled with the chemical can raise health concerns to infant and toddlers. Using flea sprays with natural ingredients can resolve this problem to a great extent, provided an excess of spray is not used on the animal.
The best way to control ticks and fleas is prevention. Keeping the pets healthy will help in reducing the flea and tick threat. Spraying the animals must be done on a regular basis, i.e., throughout the year, which is contrary to the belief that fleas and ticks will not affect the animal in winter season. Moreover, it is important for the pet owner to educate himself regarding the possible side effects of flea sprays.
