Other Ways to Control Itchy Skin in Dogs

Itchy and flakey skin in dogs is a common problem, and can be due to a number of underlying causes.

Some of these causes may include:

  • allergies
  • parasites
  • fungal infections
  • dryness of the skin

Certain breeds may also be more prone to having irritated or flakey skin. Using a shampoo that contains special ingredients proven to treat itchiness is recommended, but there are also other things pet owners can do to prevent itchiness and skin irritations in their pets. These recommendations should be used in addition to using Sulfodene shampoo.

One of the best ways to combat itchy or dry skin is by giving your pet an oatmeal bath. This can be done with special products containing oatmeal, or by creating a homemade oatmeal bath. Using 1 cup of uncooked, plain oatmeal in a bath full of warm water can greatly decrease itchiness, flaking, and other skin irritations in your dog. It is recommended that pet owners allow their dog to sit in the oatmeal bath for at least 15 minutes, and to avoid contact with the eyes.

Another way to treat skin irritations in pets is by examining your pet's diet carefully, to see if he is suffering from a food allergy. Food allergies commonly cause itchy skin in dogs. Try different foods to see if he responds differently to them, or if there are any improvements. If you manage to find the ingredient that is causing your pet allergies, remove it completely from your pet's diet.
