Cat Sneezing Treatment with Clemastine Fumarate

Clemastine fumarate is an antihistamine used to treat certain symptoms caused by allergies and other conditions. An antihistamine works by blocking the body's response to histamines, which may be produced by infections, viruses, allergies and even some types of tumors. This particular drug is not FDA approved for use in animals, but is commonly prescribed as an off-label drug to treat cats with allergic symptoms, such as sneezing, itchy skin and other inflammatory symptoms.

Cat Sneezing

Before selecting a medication such as clemastine fumarate, it's important to figure out exactly what's causing your cat to sneeze. A common cause of cat sneezing is upper respiratory infection, which is highly contagious and is usually treated with antibiotics and other remedies. Other events that will cause a cat to sneeze are a foreign body in the nasal passage, or a temporary irritant in the air. Only when a cat is sneezing due to allergies may selecting an antihistamine be beneficial.

Antihistamines

Most antihistamines, including clemastine fumarate, are available over the counter. This type of drug works in response to the body's natural defense toward allergic symptoms. Histamines are released when a cat's body is exposed to any type of allergen. These histamines attach to the cells and cause them to leak fluid, which can lead to runny eyes, runny nose, sneezing and skin irritation. The majority of antihistamine medications available, such as Tavist-D, Benadryl and Zyrtec, are combined with other substances to prevent additional symptoms. Benadryl is often recommended for cats with allergies. Clemastine fumarate is a less popular choice.

When to Choose Clemastine Fumarate

Studies show that clemastine fumarate may be a good choice for cats with skin irritation due to allergies. If cat sneezing is another of the symptoms accompanying the allergic reaction, this particular drug may be a good choice. Be careful to avoid brand name, over-the-counter drugs such as Tavist. Other ingredients included in the blend, whether active or inactive, may be harmful to your cat. It's always best to seek out a brand using clemastine fumarate that has been tested and is safe for animals. You should be able to locate this medication online or at your local pet store.

Side Effects of Clemastine Fumarate

Any time you select an over-the-counter or prescription medication, there is a potential for side effects. Clemastine fumarate is no exception, but side effects for this drug appear to be minimal. The most common side effect in cats is diarrhea. Cats may also experience drowsiness or lethargy. Dry eyes and mouth are a common side effect whenever antihistamines are used, and if your cat appears to be drinking an excess amount of water, this may be the cause. If you plan to participate in allergic skin testing to discover a diagnosis, or if your cat is pregnant, you may wish to refrain from giving this type of medication. You may experience better results by testing different types of antihistamine treatment, as directed.
