Promeris is a prescription medication that has been approved for demodectic mange treatment by the FDA. This medication is also used to kill fleas, ticks and lice on dogs and its active ingredients are amitraz and metaflumazone. Amitraz causes total paralysis and death in the mites that are responsible for canine Demodectic mange.
Demodectic Mange in Dogs
Demodectic mange is a parasitic skin disease in dogs that’s caused by mites that live in the hair follicles on the dog’s skin. The mites are known as Demodex and exist in small numbers on healthy pets. However, in cases of Demodectic mange, the mites reproduce and exist in very large numbers causing skin disease in the affected dog. This type of mange is found in dogs that are suffering from a suppressed immune system or young puppies that have an underdeveloped immune system. Demodectic mange is a chronic debilitating condition that’s difficult to treat.

- Loss of hair on the face and neck
- Itchiness
- Darkening of the skin
- Redness at the affected sites
- Bald patches
- Lethargy
Promeris for Treating Canine Demodectic Mange
Promeris is a topical medication that’s used to control ticks and fleas in dogs. It has also been approved to treat Demodectic mange in dogs. It should be applied topically on a monthly basis and, for severe cases of Demodectic mange, twice a month applications are often prescribed by the veterinarian. It’s a new flea and tick product that not only kills the mites responsible for Demodectic mange but also those that cause sarcoptic mange.
Method of Application of Promeris
You must apply Promeris between your pet’s shoulder blades taking care not to touch the medication. Empty the contents of the pouch on the same spot. The medication should be applied high enough to prevent your pet from licking it off. You should allow Promeris to dry before touching your pet or bathing him. Also clean your hands thoroughly after the application. The medication is waterproof and you needn’t reapply it after bathing your pet but you must reapply it every 4 weeks.
Side-Effects of Promeris:
- Lethargy
- Staggering
- Loss of coordination
- Drowsiness
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Difficulty in breathing
Precautions
Confirm with the veterinarian that your pet is suffering from Demodectic mange before using Promeris. Also ensure that your pet doesn’t ingest the medication once it’s applied. Promeris should be kept out of reach of children and other pets living in the household. It should also not come in contact with your skin.
It’s best not to apply the medication more than once a month as there is a high risk of overdose. Promeris shouldn’t be given in conjunction with other drugs such as tricyclic antidepressants. Besides this, it shouldn’t be used to treat puppies under the age of 8 weeks.
If your pet has Demodectic mange, it’s best to conduct a vet check and then apply Promeris. Medicated dips might also need to be used to cure generalized mange.
