Digestive Problems in Dogs: 4 Common Causes

Occasional digestive problems in dogs are common and usually resolve in a few days. If your dog has recurrent bouts of digestive upset, consider adding a probiotic supplement to her diet. Adding plain yogurt to her diet can help, too. Caution: if your dog has severe or bloody diarrhea, it could be a serious condition.

Symptoms of Digestive Problems

Gas, bloating and diarrhea are the most common signs of digestive problems in dogs. If your dog has more than three or more bowel movements in a day, consider withholding food for twenty-four hours.

Digestive Problems in Dogs: 4 Common Causes

  1. Food Change: Switch to new brands or types of dog food over a one-week period to allow your dog to adjust to any new ingredients.
  2. Food Sensitivities: Some dogs have difficulty digesting corn, soy or wheat. Switch to a rice-based diet.
  3. Parasites: Several types of internal worms can cause diarrhea and gas in dogs. Follow appropriate deworming guidelines.
  4. Inappropriate Table Scraps: Do not give your dog spicy, salty or heavily-processed table scraps.
