Herbal Relief for Constipation in Dogs

Constipation in dogs is a common occurrence and may be due to an item ingested by the dog or an internal problem. If the constipation is not caused by a serious internal problem such as a tumor, herbal relief is available. There are numerous herbs that can be used to relieve constipation, and each will be used depending on what causes the condition.

Dandelion

Dandelion is a natural cleanser that can help dogs with constipation. The herb will relive urinary problems as well. The dandelion is an herb that has different vitamins such as A, C, E and the B complex, which will strengthen the dog's body and prevent the recurrence of constipation.

Yellow Dock

Yellow dock can be used in dogs with constipation. This herb can help the liver and gallbladder and facilitate the bowel movements. This remedy can also be used if the constipation is chronic. However, if the dog has liver problems, a cleansing will be recommended. The cleansing may also be performed with herbs such as dandelion, artichoke, nettle, red clover, burdock, cleavers, horsetail or rosemary.

Milk Thistle

Milk thistle has similar properties as the dandelion. It can be used in the form of tinctures added to the dog's food or water or in the form of tea, which should be administered to the dog twice per day. This solution should relieve constipation within 24 hours.

Oregon Grape

The Oregon grape may be used when the dog's intestinal tract has an infection. The Oregon grape will eliminate the microbes, bacteria and yeast cells. This herb is also effective in reducing swelling of the digestive system.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root is a useful remedy that will naturally lubricate the intestinal mucous membranes. The marshmallow root also has a laxative effect. This will facilitate the elimination of feces.

Licorice Root

Licorice root can be used to reduce inflammation and can be effective in curing constipation caused by intestinal inflammation. These herbs may be dried and fed to the dog or mixed and prepared as teas. Herb tinctures are also available. Always make sure to dilute the tincture, as it can be very concentrated and can cause intestinal distress.

Other remedies that can relieve constipation include canned pumpkin which is rich in fibers, milk, fish oils or the supplementation of exercise, which will stimulate the digestive tract muscles and stimulate elimination. Remember to give a lot of water, which will keep the dog hydrated. Constipated dogs can get easily dehydrated and water must be given to the dog if he refuses to drink it.

Note that if the constipation lasts longer than 48 hours, you need to visit the vet, as the dog may suffer from an intestinal occlusion which can be fatal.

If the constipation is chronic and the cause is a tumor, herbal remedies can be used, but typically they will be used in conjunction with traditional medication.
