How to Prevent Allergies in Cats

If you have a sensitive cat and you would like to prevent allergies in your pet, you should know a few things about the allergies, their triggers and how to best protect your pet. Allergies may be prevented to a certain extent, depending on what is the allergen for your pet. The easiest way to prevent allergies is not to expose the cat to the irritant, but this may not be always possible.

Detect the Irritants

Detecting the irritants is essential in preventing allergies. You should notice when the pet’s symptoms are more severe and the materials he comes in contact with. In some cases, the irritants are not visible (i.e. pollen or dust).

The most accurate way to detect allergies is to get a skin or a blood test.

For food allergies, a series of trials will be required to discover the allergen.

In some cases, the cat may be allergic to 2 or several irritants.

Avoid the Irritants

The irritants may be easy to avoid (i.e. food), by not exposing the cat to these, but there are also allergens that are airborne and these are difficult to avoid. In this case, the cat should spend more time indoors or in areas where the irritants are not present and you should get an air conditioner system or air purifiers in your home.

Frequent Baths

The skin is a large organ that has pores and these pores can be the access path of the allergens to the cat’s system. Everyday baths will remove all possible irritants from your cat’s skin, before these enter the cat’s system and interact with the immune system.

Frequent House Cleaning

A frequent house cleaning is also critical in preventing allergic reactions in your cat. The allergens that are airborne will land in the home and there are also a lot of dust mites that can be serious allergens in felines.

Removing the allergens from the space where the cat spends a lot of time, will reduce if not prevent the symptoms of allergies.

Support for the Immune System

Allergies are categorized as a problem of the immune system, as the immune system reacts to the irritants and sends signals resulting in the allergic symptoms.

If the immune system is strong, the allergies are less likely to appear.

Talk to your vet to get a few supplements that are suitable for your cat.

There are also natural supplements that can improve the immunity of your pet.

Medication

If the allergies cannot be prevented in any other way not involving medication, the vet will prescribe antihistamines or steroids, as a short term treatment and will modify the type of treatment according to how the pet responds. If the allergies are caused by inhalants (i.e. pollens or dust mites) and the vet has detected the vet may prescribe an immunization therapy, which can considerably reduce the allergic symptoms.
