Robitussin for Dogs

Robitussin is a common medicine that is used in human beings to treat a variety of different respiratory conditions. This brand name medicine can also be used to treat similar conditions that affect dogs and other pets as well. Robitussin is a brand name formulation of the drug called dextromethorphan, and there are other generic forms of this drug that are available as well. If your pet is suffering from some type of respiratory condition that results in a persistent and chronic cough, or in other related symptoms, speak with your vet about whether Robitussin might be a suitable way to help deal with his health concern.

Robitussin Overview

Robitussin is effective at suppressing coughs in dogs, although it is only mild in its effects. It can also help to dislodge mucus from the nasal passageways and sinuses, helping to clear up your pet's breathing difficulties as well. It is specifically useful in cases of kennel cough and other bronchial irritation or inflammation. Though Robitussin can be purchased for human medical use over the counter and without a prescription, it's important that you not give this medicine to your dog unless you have been specifically instructed to by a veterinarian.

Robitussin is not as potent or as strong as morphine based drugs that accomplish the same function. For this reason, it's best used in cases where the cough is relatively mild or moderate in nature.

Using Robitussin for Your Dog

Robitussin is typically provided in both liquid and tablet form. Most pet owners find that it's easier to provide the medicine to their dogs when they give it in the tablet form. You can mix up the dosage of Robitussin with your pet's food or give it to him with a food treat as well.

The exact dosage that you'll need to give your pet will be based on his:

  • weight
  • size
  • age
  • breed
  • overall health condition

Because you and your vet will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the medicine and may adjust the dosage accordingly, it's important that you follow your pet's dosage instructions as closely as possible to ensure that your pet gets the treatment he needs.

Robitussin Side Effects

Robitussin may interact with certain other drugs in your pet's body. Because of this, it's important that you tell your vet of any and all extra health issues that your pet may have before you begin the treatment involving Robitussin. Your pet may also, in rare cases, suffer from a serious allergic reaction to Robitussin. If this should happen, take him to a veterinary office immediately for attention.

Generally, Robitussin is linked with the following side effects:

  • Lethargy
  • Weakness
  • Loss of appetite

If your pet is suffering from a serious cough, or if his cough is due to lung disease, kidney disease, heart disease or any other major organ health issue, Robitussin is not the best medicine for him. Speak with your vet about alternative treatments in these cases.
