Sneezing Dog Remedies Compared

Dogs may sneeze due to different health problems including dental abscesses, allergies, respiratory infections, tumors or if they have swallowed a foreign object that got stuck in the air passages. There are several sneezing dog remedies available.

Sneezing Remedies

The type of sneezing remedies your pet requires depends greatly on the cause of sneezing; if the dog has a dental abscess, antibiotics will be administered or a tooth extraction may be required.

If the dog has a tumor, surgery should be applied (if possible), followed by chemotherapy.

The most common allergy remedies include steroids, antihistamines, allergy shots or immunity booster supplements.

The respiratory infections may be cured using a few at home remedies and keeping the dog in a warm place.

Sneezing Dog Remedies Compared: Respiratory Infections

Most commonly, the dog sneezing is caused by a respiratory infection or allergies.

The respiratory infections may be treated with antibiotics if the infection is caused by viruses and bacteria and with fungicides, if the infection is of a fungal nature. However, in some cases, medication will not be required and the infection may go away in 2 to 3 weeks. The main disadvantage of the treatment with antibiotics is that it may cause secondary infections and weaken the dog’s immune system.

There are also a few at home remedies that will make the dog feel more comfortable and reduce the sneezing. Make your dog inhale some steam by placing him in a steamy bathroom. The sneezing may also be eliminated if you install an air purifier in the dog’s room.

Sneezing Remedies for Dogs with Allergies

The allergy remedies include antihistamines, steroids, allergy shots and fatty acid supplements.

The antihistamines bring a fast sneezing relief, but may not always be effective; some dogs respond only to certain antihistamines. Lengthy administration of the same antihistamine will make the dog immune to the drug, so the sneezing may reoccur.

Steroids will also bring immediate relief but if these are administered for a long period of time, they may affect the liver and kidney function of the dog.

Allergy shots may also relieve allergy symptoms, however, the dog requires at least 3 months of shots before these start to be effective. The allergy shots may not give optimal results in 25% of dogs.

An immunity booster treatment is the most recommended, especially if the allergy symptoms are milder. The allergic reactions occur in dogs with a weaker immunity, so getting some fatty acid supplements or other natural boosters can reduce the allergic reactions. Getting immunity booster supplements doesn’t have any side effects, but the dog needs to get a few weeks of supplements before the results start showing.

The dog sneezing remedies should be applied according to what affects the dog and causes the sneezing and also according to the severity of the sneezing. Each dog responds to medication differently; you may try several remedies until you find a remedy that works in your dog.
