Veterinarians typically prescribe amoxicillin for cats suffering from bacterial and other infections such as skin infections, urinary tract infections and ear infections. It might be prescribed for infections other than the ones listed. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic for cats and dogs, which restrains the formation of bacterial cell walls leading to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.Brand names for amoxicillin are Trimox, Biomox, Amoxil and Robamox- BV.
Amoxicillin is available in tablets (100mg-400mg), capsules (250mg-500mg) and oral liquid (50ml). Typical amoxicillin dosage is 5 to 10 mg per pound every 12 to 24 hours. However, the actual dosage for your cat will be best decided by your veterinarian after proper diagnosis.
A cat on amoxicillin can experience side effects such as shortness of breath, bloody diarrhoea, hives, rash, fainting, swelling of tongue, face or the lips, bruising, unusual bleeding or seizures. Some less severe side effects include vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, fungal or yeast infection.
