How Effective Are Herbal Cures for Diarrhea in Dogs

Herbal cures may be used in dogs with different ailments. Diarrhea can be cured with herbal remedies, but not in all cases. The cause of diarrhea should be detected and herbal remedies may only be effective if there is no serious underlying condition. Dogs may also respond differently to herbal cures, so these may not always be effective in all dogs.

Causes of Canine Diarrhea

Determining the cause of diarrhea in your pet is important, so that you know if herbal remedies can be applied.

Diarrhea is common in dogs and may be caused by a wide range of factors including:

The herbal cures are only recommended if the diarrhea is acute and is caused by foods or a mild infection. The herbal remedies may bring temporary diarrhea relief if the dog is affected by a serious condition such as liver problems or tumors, but the diarrhea will be recurrent and the underlying condition should be dealt with. There may be herbal remedies for cancer or liver disease as well, but the vet may recommend these in conjunction with traditional medication.

Herbal Cures for Diarrhea

If the cause of diarrhea is identified and is not severe, herbal cures may be applied. The herbs may be found in pet health stores and may be used in the dog’s food. There are also liquid solutions that are made of herbal essences which can be used and added to the dog’s diet. Common herbs that can help relieving diarrhea include the slippery elm, the pulsatilla vulgaris, catnip, the licorice root or Echinacea.

Catnip

The catnip is an essential source of fibers which can clear diarrhea. This solution can be effective to eliminate diarrhea in canines, regardless of the cause of diarrhea. Catnip can also relieve constipation, stomach cramps or flatulence.

Slippery Elm

The slippery elm is an herbal remedy that will soothe the stomach and will be beneficial for the mucous membranes. This herb is effective in eliminating diarrhea caused by diet or the ingestion of garbage or other non food items.

Licorice Root

The licorice root is a natural remedy for diarrhea and can be used if the diarrhea is caused by an infection, food allergies or the irritation of the stomach or intestinal tract. The licorice root will reduce swelling and may have similar effects as corticosteroids.

Pulsatilla Vulgaris

Pulsatilla vulgaris is a natural compound that may cure diarrhea or constipation, normalizing the metabolism of the dog.

Echinacea

Echinacea can be effective in reducing diarrhea if this is caused by an infection, a sudden change of diet or food intolerance. The herb will give a boost to the immune system and will prevent the recurrence of diarrhea.

Herbal cures may be used in dogs as they have no side effects and can be effective in many cases. However, if there are no signs of improvement after a few days, a vet should be consulted.
