There are many effective remedies for dog allergies that are available. However, finding what works best for your pet can be difficult and time consuming. The sooner you find the right prescription remedy, the happier your dog will be.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines are usually the first remedies for dog allergies that
veterinarians will prescribe. They are generally safe, easy to
administer and are highly effective. If your dog is scratching a lot
and has dry or itchy skin, antihistamines may help. Common
antihistamines that are prescribed include chlorpheniramine, atarax and
clemastine. Since there are so many varieties, you may need to try a
few different types before you find what works best for your dog.
Some
dogs will experience adverse reactions to antihistamines. Most
commonly, they will make dogs lethargic or have the opposite effect,
and make them extremely excited. There are other side effects that can
also occur, including dry mouth. If your dog experiences any reactions,
stop the medication and contact your veterinarian.
Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acid supplements are also effective remedies for dog
allergies. The oils in the supplements can help provide a barrier
between your dog’s skin and potential allergens he might come in
contact with. Omega-3 also provides anti-inflammatory properties, which
can be helpful in ear and skin irritations. Fatty acids can also help
to maintain a healthy coat and skin.
Not all pets with
allergies are helped by the use of fatty acid supplements, but many
will find a large amount of relief. Some dogs need to take the
supplements for weeks until they show signs of improvement. The
supplements are available in capsule form and can be obtained from your
veterinarian. It is best to use Omega-3 fatty acids in conjunction with
antihistamines and a low-fat diet.
Steroids
Steroids are helpful in treating problems that occur as a result of allergies, but don't actually treat the allergies directly. If used correctly, steroids can be safe and highly effective in helping severe itching and inflammation. However, because of their high success rate, steroids are often over-used and dosed incorrectly, which can be extremely dangerous to the dog. Steroids should only be used as a remedy for dog allergies in severe cases.
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is considered to be the most effective of the remedies for dog allergies. Immunotherapy treatment is suggested for dogs who have allergy symptoms four to six months out of the year, and who haven’t had success with other types of remedies. Immunotherapy begins with blood work or skin testing to determine exactly what your pet is allergic to. A serum that contains the altered antigens is then created specifically for your dog. The pet owner injects the serum into the dog following a strict schedule. The dog then becomes de-sensitized to the allergenic culprits he was once allergic to. About 80 percent of dogs who undergo this type of therapy experience success in the treatment of their allergies. Immunotherapy can be costly, and requires a large amount of dedication from the pet owner.
