Seraquin for Dogs

Seraquin represents a supplement that is used for improving the mobility and the overall health of joints in dogs and cats. It can be used either alone, if the symptoms are not very severe, or in combination with prescription drugs recommended for the treatment of arthritis. Seraquin provides good results, no matter if the joint problem occurred as a result of a growth deformity or after an injury.

Ingredients in Seraquin

This supplement is based on 3 high-quality ingredients that all act to preserve the normal function of joints. More precisely, Seraquin includes:

  • Chondroitin
  • Curcumin
  • Glucosamine Hydrochloride

Besides these, Seraquin also contains the following inactive ingredients:

  • Calcium stearate
  • Corn protein
  • Dextrose
  • Dried yeast
  • Hydrolysed chicken protein
  • Sugar

Chondroitin plays a very important role in the production of glucosaminoglycans, the building blocks from which the cartilage is made. Curcumin, on the other hand, is an antioxidant that inhibits the effect of free radicals on the joints. Not at last, glucosamine hydrochloride assures the supply of iminosurgars that are used in the synthesis of cartilage and synovial fluid. The latter is a sort of lubricant found in a capsule that also contains the moving parts of the joints.

Availability and Administration of Seraquin for Dogs

Seraquin is available as chewable tablets of 2g each. The dosage depends very much on the weight of the dog. In addition, you must know that the treatment is separated into an initial period of 4 to 6 weeks and a maintenance period, in which the dosage is progressively decreased by half a tablet each week. This decrement must be done until the maintenance dose equals half of the dose from the initial period. The dosage recommended during the initial period is as follows:

  • 1 tablet per day for dogs weighing 20 pounds or less
  • 2 tablets per day for dogs weighing from 20 to 40 pounds
  • 3 tablets per day for dogs of 40 to 80 pounds
  • 4 tablets per day for dogs weighing more than 80 pounds

As previously mentioned, the maintenance level is half of the dosage administered during the initial period. However, the veterinarian may recommend a different dosage, depending on how serious the joints are affected.

Precautions and Side Effects

The safety of Seraquin in pregnant or nursing dogs has not been evaluated. Still, the supplement must be administered with great care in dogs who suffer from one of the following health conditions:

  • Allergy to shellfish
  • Clotting disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Metabolic conditions associated with hyperglycemia
  • Urinary tract stones

Seraquin is considered to be a safe supplement, so there are no serious adverse reactions to it, unless the dog is allergic to one of the ingredients. In rare cases, the supplement may cause a mild gastrointestinal upset, but this can be easily prevented by administering Seraquin after or with a meal. There are certain rare situations when Seraquin does not improve the joint symptoms of your dog or even more, the condition worsens. If this ever happens, you are highly recommended to stop giving your dog Seraquin and to talk to a veterinarian. After consulting the symptoms of the dog, the veterinarian may decide to prescribe a more potent drug or to adjust the dosage.
