A low protein level in a dog diet for kidney disease is important to avoid increased levels of toxins. Select a protein source with high bio-availability. This means the source of protein in the food is readily utilized by the dog. Eggs have the highest bio-availability with fish meal and milk close behind. The food should have an increased vitamin D3 level as the kidney patient's body can't activate vitamin D2 into D3. Phosphorus levels should be lower in a kidney diet as a dog with kidney disease will retain both phosphorus and potassium, creating crystallization in the kidneys and an imbalance between calcium and potassium. Increased levels of calcium in the diet are important as calcium resorption is impaired due to the lower levels of vitamin D. Increased calcium will help prevent bone fractures. Slowing the progression of kidney disease by feeding a proper kidney diet and maintaining good hydration can provide many good years ahead for the kidney patient.
