Cleaning Supplies That Can Poison Your Dog

Cleaning supplies can be toxic to your dog. Common products such as bleach, detergent and disinfectants can cause dogs gastrointestinal and respiratory irritation.

Toxic Products Are Common

Many of the products we use to clean our homes contain toxic ingredients. Dishwashing detergents are among the least toxic products, but many contain phosphates, which are poisonous. Wood polish often contains the flammable ingredient nitrobenzene. Ammonia and bleach can be fatal to dogs.

Many popular brands of cleaning products contain chemicals that cause long-term damage, such as sodium laurel sulfate, which is carcinogenic.

Safeguard Your Cleaning Supplies

One way you can prevent dog poisoning is to keep your cleaning products out of your dog's reach. Lock them up in a high cupboard that your dog can't get to.

Use Non-Toxic Cleaners

Non-toxic cleaners are becoming more and more popular as more people become aware of the dangers of toxic cleaning products. Homemade cleaning products such as baking soda, unscented soap and lemon can clean, deodorize and disinfect. There are also a wide variety of commerical cleaning products which are non-toxic and safe for your dog.
