Golden Retriever Training Tips

Golden Retrievers are known to be intelligent, well-mannered, friendly and loyal. These dogs often respond well to Golden Retriever training because they are eager to learn, and they like to please their owners. The Golden Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They are bright, athletic and easy to train. Golden Retrievers are excellent companion dogs for the family because they are fun-loving and devoted pets.

Basic Training Tips for the Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers are known to excel in obedience and agility training. They are commonly used for mobility assistance dogs because of their gentle nature. Golden Retrievers can also prove to be ideal therapy dogs. Puppies or adult dogs may respond well to the following training tips:

  • Be consistent with training, and keep your dog's attention. Training should be a positive experience.
  • Reward your dog when he demonstrates the desired behavior.
  • Keep your dog on a regular daily schedule for meals, exercise and sleep. Your dog will understand what is expected of him and how to behave.
  • Provide leadership for your dog by setting reasonable house rules. Determine what is unacceptable behavior, such as jumping up on people or begging for food at the table.
  • Keep your dog's attention span in mind when scheduling your daily training sessions. An average training session may last 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Offer your dog positive reinforcement with praise, treats or playtime after the training session is finished.

Training to Control Chewing Behaviors

Dogs chew to relieve anxiety or because they are bored. Puppies may chew because they are teething. Teach your dog appropriate chewing behavior with these training tips:

  • It is essential for your dog to get enough physical exercise and attention each day.
  • You can take your Golden Retriever for daily walks to channel his energy. Golden Retrievers like to play Frisbee, retrieve ball, swim and hunt.
  • If you see your dog chewing on something inappropriate, simply say "No." You can offer him a safe chew toy instead.  Offer your dog a treat in exchange for the object in his mouth.
  • You could use a safe dog crate or playpen for your dog, if you are planning to be away from your home for a few hours.

Training a Golden Retriever to Control his Jumping Behavior

Golden Retrievers can weigh 65 to 75 pounds. It is important to train your dog not to jump up on people for safety reasons. Jumping behavior may be controlled with these helpful tips:

  • To teach your Golden Retriever not to jump up, you can gently help him get back down when he jumps up to greet you.
  • Tell your dog to sit and give him verbal praise or a treat when he obeys you.
  • You can bend down to your dog's level when he's sitting, and you can allow him to give you his greeting, while he remains in the sitting position.
  • Always be consistent when teaching your Golden Retriever not to jump up, so he doesn't get confused.
