Using a Cat Training Alarm

A cat training alarm is a device that’s used to train pets that behave in an undesirable manner. Pet owners generally know more about dog training methodologies in comparison to feline behavior training methods. But if you don’t want your cat to climb your kitchen counters or your dining table you can use the alarm to discourage these undesirable behaviors. Besides the cat alarm many owners also use spray bottles and noisemakers as training tools.

How the Cat Training Alarm Works

The cat training alarm has motion and vibration sensors. Once the alarm is activated, it lets out a high pitched tone that’s unpleasant for your pet. Since the alarm has motion sensors you don’t have to manually press a button to activate the alarm every time your cat climbs on the counter or your dining table. You could simply leave the alarm on the counter top or your table top. Once the alarm senses your cat’s presence it will automatically emit the high pitched sound.

The cat will eventually understand that there’s a relation between the sound of the alarm and him climbing on top of the counter. In clinical terms this is known as conditioning. Your pet will therefore stop climbing up on the counter after a few weeks. You can use the same technique to prevent your cat from doing anything else that’s undesirable.

Cat Training Alarms

There are different types of cat alarms that are sold by different manufacturers and some of them come with multiple settings. These alarms are designed to work on batteries and most of them sound the alarm for less than 2 seconds. Once the alarm has gone off the device will automatically turn off the alarm within 2 seconds. Most training alarms can be placed outdoors as well, in order to keep the cat away from certain areas outside the home. However, some alarms are not waterproof and are designed only for indoor use.

The cost of a cat training alarm ranges between $18 and $30, and you will be able to either purchase one online or at local pet stores.

Changing your Cat’s Behavior

In order for the training to be successful you must follow through till the cat’s behavior has changed. The alarm must go off each time your cat climbs the counter or the pet will get confused and the training will be of no use. If you don’t want to purchase a cat alarm to change your cat’s behavior you will have to use a noisemaker to startle your cat each time he does something undesirable.

A simple can filled with a few coins can serve as a cheap alternative to cat alarms and commercial noisemakers. The only difference is that you will have to manually use the noisemaker to alter your pet’s bad behavior each time it occurs.

Tips for Pet Owners:

  • If your cat is sitting on the countertop simply because he can look outdoors, give him another location to sit and look outside, especially if you use the training alarm to keep him off the counter.
  • Remember that the cat training alarm can startle other animals living in the same house.
  • You should also praise good behavior as soon as it happens. Felines like to be praised and appreciated and this will work to your benefit during the training process.
  • Discourage bad behavior the same time it happens so that the cat understands and unlearns the undesirable behavior.

Instead of reprimanding your cat or punishing him in an inhumane manner it’s best to use the cat training alarm to alter his behavior. Also consider changing only one behavior at a time so that the training is successful.
