What to Look for in a Cat Crate

A cat crate can be the place where your pet sleeps, but it may also be an important device when your cat needs to travel or be transported to the vet. When purchasing a cat crate you will need to look for a number of features that will make the crate suitable for the cat’s sleeping place but also for transportation.

Crate Materials

Cat crates can be made of various materials such as plastic, wood, textile materials or even metal. When choosing the crate material, you will have to think about the purpose of the crate, whether you want it for indoors use only or you would also want to use it for traveling purposes as well.

If you want a multipurpose crate, you will want to choose a crate that will not be heavy and can be easily transported. Look for sturdy handles that are placed on each side of the crate, which will help you transport the pet easily.

Waterproof crates are preferred, especially if you are planning to travel by plane.

Cat Crate Size

A cat crate may be as big as you want it to be for your pet, provided you don’t want to travel with the crate. The crate can be a place of comfort for your feline and you can add pillows and blankets for your cat.

If you want to travel by plane, you will have to follow a few rules that are established by the airline carrier. The size requirements can vary, but typically, you can be sure a crate that is less than 15 inches high, under 15 inches wide and 20 inches long will be accepted by all airlines. Cats may be accepted to travel in the passenger cabin, so the crate should fit under the passenger seat.

When choosing the crate, you have to test if the cat can stand up in it and is comfortable moving around it. You should also be able to fit in 2 bowls for food and water, especially if you are traveling with your pet.

Ventilated Crate

The crate can be the place where the cat will be sleeping or traveling in, so you need to make sure it will be ventilated. During a trip or even during the night, you may choose to close the crate, so the cat needs to be able to breathe.

The cat’s safety is extremely important.

Hard Bottom

A practical crate for a cat should have a hard bottom, as this will offer stability for the cat. If you opt for textile materials, make sure the bottom is hard and stable.

The bottom should also be waterproof, as the cat can spill things inside the crate, so the bottom will protect your home or the car/ airplane. Also, the waterproof bottom will prevent the water from entering the crate, keeping the cat safe and dry.
