What's the Best Supplement for Dog Shedding?

While many people go searching for the best supplement for dog shedding that is excessive in nature, in reality there are many other ways of dealing with this problem that are generally much more effective. Some of these effective ways of treating your pet's excessive shedding issue include the following:

  • Proper diet
  • Good hydration
  • Regular brushing and grooming

Between these measures, most owners will find that they have adequately dealt with their dog's excessive shedding. However, if this isn't the case and you find that you're still in need of some additional help, you may consider using a nutritional supplement.

Coat Improvement Supplements

Generally, the best supplements that are available for your pet's shedding are those that work to improve the quality of his coat overall. These supplements regularly include fatty acids like Omega-6 and Omega-3, which are found naturally in fish and many of the ingredients in most dog foods. However, if your pet doesn't get enough of these supplements in his regular diet, his coat can lose its luster and begin to fall out more easily than it would otherwise. Therefore, a good and healthy coat will be much less likely to shed unnecessarily, and coat improvement supplements are typically the most successful and efficient at improving your dog's coat overall.

General Diet Supplements

If your pet suffers from other conditions as a result of malnutrition or an imbalanced diet, you may find that a general diet supplement will work well also. While a supplement is no substitute for an overall balanced and healthy diet of quality foods, this can be used in a pinch if you don't have access to those foods. These supplements generally include a host of different vitamins and minerals which are important to your pet's health and longevity, including the fatty acids and other vitamins that help to improve your pet's coat and reduce shedding.

Raw Food Diets

Although they are generally less common throughout most of the country and the rest of the world, dog food diets that are made entirely of raw foods that haven't been produced in any way are supposed to provide your pet with an excellent coat, if done correctly. Veterinarians who are proponents of these unorthodox diets recommend that they reduce shedding at all other times throughout the year aside from those specific changes in season when your dog will move between his warmer and lighter coats to accommodate the changes in the weather.

Other Considerations

None of these nutritional supplements will work well if your pet is not able to adequately process those supplements. In order to be able to do this, he must already have an excellent and well balanced diet. Avoid spending a small amount of money on a low grade pet food for your dog, as you'll sacrifice the quality of the ingredients that he receives and, in turn, the quality of his health. Opt instead for a trusted brand of dog food that is proven to lead to healthy and happy dogs, and you may find that your pet's shedding problem clears up without supplements at all.
