Are Hairless Cats Hypoallergenic?

Cat allergies are a common issue for a large portion of the population, and many pet owners look to hairless cats as a solution to their allergy problems. A hairless cat, however, is not a guarantee against allergic reactions. No cats are completely hypoallergenic, and a hairless cat can still cause reactions in people with cat allergies.

What Causes Allergic Reactions to Cats?

It is a common misconception that cat hair causes allergies. In fact, allergens come from a protein found in a cat's skin and saliva. These allergens often come in contact with humans through shedding and cat dander which often sticks to hair. Though a hairless cat will obviously not shed due to the small amount of hair on it's body, the allergens are still present in the cat's skin and saliva.

How To Reduce Cat Allergies

Whether you have a hairless cat or any other breed, there are ways to reduce cat allergies in your home. Vacuum your house often to clean up cat dander and hair that may be carrying allergens from skin or saliva. Keep your cat off your pillows and bed and wash your linens. Also, avoid touching your face and wash your hands after petting your cat.
