Prescription Transfer Tips for Pet Medicines

Pet medicines may be available as over the counter drugs or as prescription drugs. The over the counter drugs are easily accessible in most pharmacies, while the prescription drugs involve several steps, starting from getting the approval of the veterinarian, getting a prescription and picking the meds up at a pharmacy. If you want to transfer your prescription to a new pharmacy, this is possible, but you need to know a few details about your old pharmacy and the vet that has prescribed the meds.

Prescription Meds for Pets

Prescription meds for pets may be required for various medical conditions, starting from simple infections to cancer. Pets suffering from chronic conditions are also in need for prescription drugs. You can choose your pharmacy according to the process or the recommendations of your vet. However, you may change your pharmacy if you move or find a pharmacy that is more convenient for your needs, so you may have to transfer a few prescriptions for your pet as well.

Contact the New Pharmacy

If you are intending to transfer a prescription, you will have to get in touch with the new pharmacy. You may contact the pharmacy on the phone or even via email (not all pharmacies have this option).

Contacting the pharmacy via phone is easier and you can also ask any questions that you may have, plus you will also solve the situation in a shorter period of time.

You may also visit the new pharmacy and talk to them.

Ask them what they need from you when transferring the prescription, but make sure they have the meds your pet requires in stock.

Gather All Needed Info

The new pharmacy will typically ask you some info on your pet and his prescription. You will also have to provide a few details about your address and possibly your vet’s name and address.

Let the new pharmacy know about your old pharmacy as well (name, address and phone number). You can find all these online or on the pet’s previous pill bottles.

You may also bring an empty pill bottle to the new pharmacy, as this will contain some info as well (i.e. prescription number).

The Prescription Transferring Process

The majority of the pharmacies have a prescription transferring process that will contact your old pharmacy for you, so you won’t have to do that.

The new pharmacy will call the old pharmacy and get the info they need, so that the prescription transfer can be completed. Some pharmacies may also call the veterinarian doctor to confirm some details.

Some pharmacies may ask you to go to the old pharmacy and bring some info yourself.

Check If Transfer Is Completed

To make sure that your transfer is completed, you can check with your new pharmacy via phone or pay a visit.

You may also inform your vet that you have changed pharmacies.
