Ringworms are a fungal infection, despite the name which may bring to mind a parasitic infection. The ringworm infection is caused by fungi that can infect pets. It is highly important to detect the infection in a timely manner and get veterinary help. There are a number of home remedies that can be used in dogs.
Symptoms of Ringworms
Before getting a home remedy for ringworms, it is important to get a clear diagnosis. The ringworm infection can present the following symptoms:
- Circular lesions
- Round hair loss patches
- Itchy skin
- Sores on various areas the body
Home Remedies for Dog Ringworms
There are several efficient home remedies that can be used when fighting a ringworm infection. These remedies may include:
- Antiseptic soaps and shampoos
- Lime sulfur dip
- Apple cider vinegar
- Over the counter anti-fungal creams
Antiseptic Soaps or Shampoos
Antiseptic soaps and shampoos may be used for the prevention and treatment of ringworms. Antiseptic soaps that contain betadine or antifungal shampoos (e.g., 2 percent miconazole shampoo or 0.5 percent clorhexidine shampoo) can be used.
These products should be used when bathing the dog, which is recommended every other day until the lesions disappear. The products should be massaged into the dog's skin and then the dog should be thoroughly rinsed. Through the use of antiseptic soaps and shampoos you remove the spores, avoiding reinfection.
Lime Sulfur Dip
A lime sulfur dip can be an effective treatment for a ringworm infection. Use 4 oz of concentrated lime sulfur in a gallon of water. Apply the dip twice a week during the first two weeks, and once per week for the following four to six weeks. You don't have to rinse or shampoo the dog after the application of the dip.
You should be careful, because there may be some negative aspects in this treatment:
- The unpleasant smell of lime sulfur
- Spots may remain on the dog's skin, and the coat may change in color
- It can damage the eyes, if the solution gets in the dog's eyes
- The lungs of the pet may be affected as well
Apple Cider Vinegar
Using apple cider vinegar may eliminate a ringworm infection. The affected area must be dabbed with a sponge soaked in apple cider vinegar once per day. Alternatively, it may be used in the dog's water, provided your dog takes baths at least twice per week during the ringworm treatment. The apple cider vinegar changes the acidity of the skin, removing the fungal infection.
Anti-Fungal Creams
Anti-fungal creams with miconazole or clotrimazole can be bought over the counter from pharmacies and should be applied twice per day on the affected area.
Treatment Time
The treatment time depends on the kind of treatment applied. If no treatment is applied, the ringworm infections should subside within 2 to 4 months. Applying one of the above mentioned treatments can help the dog and relieve his discomfort.
