Over the Counter Dog Joint Supplements

Dog joint supplements are recommended for pets that have swollen joints or suffer from arthritis. The supplements for your dog will be able to reduce the symptoms of arthritis and make the dog feel better, enabling him to perform daily activities such as running or climbing stairs. Even if you will find over the counter supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin, you should always consult your vet prior to administering these, as these supplements may have secondary effects.

When to Administer Joint Supplements

The joint supplements should be administered only if your vet recommends these. Typically, the supplements are given to dogs that suffer from arthritis or are prone to developing arthritis (due to age or breed size).

Dogs that have hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis can also receive joint supplements.

You can detect a joint problem in your pet if he:

  • Has difficulties climbing stairs or standing up after a few hours of sleep
  • Is lethargic and refuses to play or perform normal activities
  • The limbs are swollen and your dog may feel pain when you touch the affected joints

The symptoms will start showing only if the disease is an advanced stage; typically, in the initial stages, you won’t be able to notice any signs. For this reason, it’s important to get regular checkups, especially after your pet turns 5, which is the age when arthritis can start in many dogs.

Over the Counter Joint Supplements

You may get over the counter joint supplements in most pet stores, but administer these only if recommended by your vet.

When you look for such supplements, make sure these have quality compounds and avoid artificial formulas for joints, as these may be helpful in relieving the joint swelling, but may cause other side effects.

Natural ingredients are best when you choose the supplements.

Glucosamine is commonly prescribed to dogs with joint pain and swelling. The substance may be derived from natural sources, as it exists in the dog’s body, but may also be artificially formulated.

Yucca is a natural supplement that may be used also as an over the counter supplement for your pet.

Other supplements that may be found as OTC for canines include:

  • Glyco Fex
  • Super Joint Omega
  • Cosequin

The effect of the OTC joint supplements will be positive in most cases, but there are also dogs that won’t respond in any way.

OTC Supplements Administration

The supplements for joints should be administered only as recommended by your vet or pharmacist. The dose varies according to your dog’s condition, weight and breed.

If your pet has diabetes, you should talk to your vet and have periodical blood tests to check the glucose, as some supplements such as glucosamine may be high in glucose. Get a glucometer for home use.

The overdose of joint supplements may cause some severe side effects such as abnormal bone growth or obesity.
