Is it safe to give two rabies shots to my dog?

My dog had his first shots done in March. I didn't receive a rabies cert. So when I got him neutered in June, they said they had to give it to him again. Is that safe?

While administering a Rabies vaccine twice in such a short period is not known to be directly harmful unless a dog has an allergy to the vaccine, it is not the best practice either as overvaccination may cause harmful side effects that are not well understood. If the Rabies vaccine given in March was given by a veterinarian and appropriate records were kept, you should have been able to obtain a certificate from the doctor who gave the vaccine. It is illegal in the United States for a Rabies vaccine to be given by anyone other than a veterinarian, so if your dog had this vaccine legally, there must have been a veterinarian involved who should have been able to sign a certificate even three months later. This is not necessarily malpractice, but something for you to keep in mind for next time and possibly to talk to your veterinarian about as a concern. Erika, DVM

  • Should I vaccinate my dog with an adenovirus reaction history?

Should I vaccinate my dog for rabies with an extreme adenovirus reaction history? My dog reacted to the canine adenovirus vaccine. She developed "blue eye" and severe glaucoma. Her eye was removed at 8 wks old dispite tx. efforts. Many vets want her vaccinated against rabies. I am very resistant. She also has a history of demodex mange, blood clots(post surgery), and GI Problems. I fear she has an immune problem and can not handle vaccines. • Worried about viral shedding after vaccination with my dog

I have read that dogs shed parvo virus after they are vaccinated. My 4 year old dog got her parvo vaccine 4 days ago. Can it be transmitted if they are just playing and I make sure my dog doesn't poop there? Thank You

Hi there, I'm moving from the UK to France in the next couple of months and we have a 12 year old Border Terrier /Jack Russell cross that we want to take with us. She's not over weight and we've never known her to have any bad reactions to injections before but I'm worried about her having the rabies shot. Can you please tell me if there's any advice particularly relevant to an old dog like Josie. Thanks.
