There are three different surgeries commonly performed for tracheal collapse. Which surgery is selected depends on the implants available and where the trachea is collapsing. If the trachea is collapsing in the neck only, there are two options. A tracheoplasty may be done using ring implants around the trachea to stabilize it or using a spiral implant around the trachea for the same purpose. The spiral implant may be chosen if the trachea is collapsing over a large area, or based on surgeon preference. When the trachea collapses inside the chest, stents, a form of stabilization placed within the trachea, can be implanted to stabilize the airway.

to do surgery or to not? my dog has a considerably large lump on her side. the vet didn't like it and took a sample and looked under the microscope and said it's definitely not fatty and he'd like to remove it. he said after he took it out he would send it in to see if it was cancerous. my question is my dog is an 11 year old sheltie, she has elevated white blood cell counts, and the enzymes in her pancreas that digest fat aren't working properly. are the risks of surgery worth it?

I am in a tough spot because obviously the mass needs to be removed, but I really do not want to make her trachea condition any worse.. the vet didn't seem to think it was a problem, but she is not the surgeon.

His skull was fractured and so he underwent surgery to treat the bacteria in the brain which was introduced by the bite and the shards of skull which punctured his left frontal, parietal and temporal lobe were removed. The removal caused more bleeding. I just don't know what kind of quality of life to expect for him. He is only 3. Is it plausible he will recover to be a happy and functioning pet? It's very costly.

My dog is a 6-year-old Kerry Blue Irish Terrier. Two years ago, we noticed a small amount of blood in her urine. We quickly arranged an appointment with a local vet in town. They discovered a large mass in her bladder and found irregular cells. They first believed it was cancer but with further study discovered it was a polyp. She still has trouble going to the bathroom and the urine only trickles out. The blood level has gone down quite a bit but seems to rise when she exercises. Would it be worth her to undergo surgery to remove the polyp?

  • Cruciate Repair surgery for my 8 year old dog?

I have a 8 yr old female mix (jack russell, & Chihuahua). The vet said based on feeling her leg he believes that she needs cruciate repair surgery. Deramaxx 25mg seems to make her function normally. After a long day sometimes she will begin to limp and when she isn't on the medicine she doesn't seem like she wants to do much which is sad because she has always been a very active dog. I noticed that you said dogs under 35pds sometimes do as well without surgery. Any recommendations? She is 16 lbs.
