    E. coli infections in pets are caused by the same bacteria that can cause infections in people. Dogs generally do not get the forms of E. coli that cause serious infections in humans. The most common E. coli infection in dogs is a urinary tract infection caused by E. coli. This is a similar E. coli to the organism that causes many urinary tract infections in humans. It is possible for you to catch E. coli from your dog, but this is unlikely to happen if you have a normal, healthy immune system and practice good hygiene. If you are careful about washing your hands after contact with your dog until the antibiotics are gone, you should not run a serious risk of infection.
